The use of fertilizers often renders the soil useless after three or four crops, due to "burn". The soil not only ceases to be of use for cotton farming, but for any kind of agriculture whatsoever, and this contributes to the problem of desertification.

The major end uses for cotton fiber include apparel, home furnishings, and other industrial uses such as medical supplies. From the beginning of the 20th century to the end of WWII, cotton accounted for 81% of the world's total fiber consumption. A shift occurred in the 1940s when man-made fibers first appeared in the market. Cotton fiber is made primarily into yarns and threads for use in the textile and apparel sectors, which today account for approximately 60% of cotton consumption. Cotton is the largest natural fiber for textiles and it is estimated that each year there will be a 4.5 billion pound increase for cotton.
